Profile:
Since 1893, Virginia Commonwealth University
has been training select individuals to provide
high-quality dental care services. The four-year
dental program emphasizes study in three broad areas:
basic sciences, clinical sciences, and social
sciences.
Specialized training beyond the DDS degree is
available in the following areas: Advanced Education
in General Dentistry, Endodontics, Oral and
Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthodontics, Pediatric
Dentistry, Periodontics, Prosthodontics, General
Practice Residency, and postgraduate training in
Anesthesia for Dentistry.

Admissions Requirements:
Applicants must complete a minimum of 90
semester hours at an accredited college or
university. However, it is recommended to complete a
bachelor's degree before applying. Sixty semester
hours at an accredited community college followed by
a minimum of 60 hours at an accredited four-year
institution is also acceptable. Prerequisite
coursework is as follows:
General Biology or Zoology - 8
Semester Units
General Chemistry with lab - 8
Semester Units
Organic Chemistry with lab - 8
Semester Units
Physics with lab - 8 Semester
Units
In addition, the School strongly recommends
coursework in general microbiology, animal or
vertebrate physiology, genetics, cell biology and
biochemistry and if possible, courses in immunology,
embryology or developmental biology and vertebrate
histology. Also encouraged are non-science studies in
the behavioral sciences and those involving
psychomotor skills.
