Indiana University School of Dentistry

Profile:
IUSD is one of the oldest dental schools in the nation. It began as the Indiana Dental College in 1879 and was purchased by Indiana University in 1925. In 1997, IUSD revamped its D.D.S. curriculum. Now known as the Indiana Model of Dental Education, the new curriculum blends contemporary and traditional learning environments to integrate the principles of student centeredness, critical thinking, problem-solving, evidence-based decision-making, competency-based clinical care, and lifelong learning. A significant part of the curriculum is tutorial-based: in small groups (usually 6-7 people), students are presented with patient health care problems. With guidance from a faculty tutor, students actively discuss the problem and develop a way to approach it.

Admissions Requirements:
A minimum of ninety (90) semester hours of coursework must be completed by the time of matriculation. The following courses are required:

  Biology w/lab- 8 Semester Units
  Inorganic Chemistry w/lab - 8 Semester Units
  General Physics w/lab - 8 Semester Units
English Composition - 2 Semester Units
Human Anatomy - 4 Semester Units
Biochemistry lecture - 3 Semester Units
Human physiology lecture - 3 Semester Units
  Organic Chemistry w/lab - 4 Semester Units
Introductory Psychology - 2 Semester Units

It is strongly suggested that students take additional upper division courses.
