University of Alabama School of Dentistry

Profile:
Founded in 1945, The University of Alabama School of Dentistry at Birmingham offers a D.M.D program, as well as accredited postdoctoral programs in twelve areas of study.

The first two years of UAB's D.M.D. program concentrate on building skills in the basic sciences. The school offers a "PreClinical" program to ensure its students have the science foundation needed for success in actual clinical experience. Students attend clinical science courses throughout the four-year program. Clinical practice is offered during the first year on a limited basis. Patient management courses are introduced during the second year.

The final two years of the UAB curriculum immerses students in actual clinical experience with patients at the school clinics. This comprehensive program provides first-hand experience in every aspect of patient care from diagnosis to treatment planning. Students in their final year have the opportunity to observe practicing dentists throughout Alabama.

Admissions Requirements:
A minimum of three academic years of study (90 semester hours or equivalent) is required at a college or university accredited by one of the regional accrediting bodies recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Specific academic requirements include:

General Biology - 12 Semester Units
Inorganic Chemistry - 8 Semester Units
  Organic Chemistry w/lab - 8 Semester Units
  Physics - 8 Semester Units
  English - 6 Semester Units

24 credits in other non-science courses are also required. 30 Semester Hours are required. Courses in the social sciences and humanities are recommended. Courses to enhance manual dexterity (sculpting, painting, etc.) also are encouraged.

It is strongly suggested that students take additional upper division courses in the sciences.
